Guests ask us this constantly at the office: should we book a hotel or an apartment in Zabljak? Having watched thousands of visitors pass through since 2011, here is the honest answer — it depends on how you travel, but for most Durmitor trips the apartment wins. Here is why, point by point.
Cost per night
Zabljak hotels are limited in number, so they price accordingly, especially in July–August and ski season. A good central apartment typically costs less per night than a comparable hotel room — and the gap widens for families, since one apartment replaces two hotel rooms. Over a 4–5 night stay, that difference often covers a 14 km rafting tour (€60 per person).
The kitchen question
This matters more in Zabljak than in most destinations:
- Restaurants here are good but few, and outside peak season some close early or entirely.
- Mountain mornings start early — hotel breakfast at 8:00 does not help when your rafting transfer leaves at 8:30 and you want to eat at 7:00.
- Cooking a few dinners with local ingredients (Durmitor cheese, smoked ham, fresh bread) is half the experience anyway.
Hotels answer with half-board convenience — genuinely nice after a long hike if you do not want to think about food at all.
Early departures and flexibility
Our 36 km Tara rafting is a full-day trip with a morning start. Apartment guests make their own coffee, pack their own snacks and walk out when they need to. Hotel guests are tied to fixed breakfast and check-out logistics. For adventure travel — where weather can shift your plans by a day — flexibility is worth a lot.
Where hotels win
To be fair:
- One-night stopovers — no need for a kitchen if you are passing through.
- Full service — daily cleaning, reception, on-site restaurant.
- Spa facilities — a couple of hotels offer wellness areas, welcome after a cold-water day.
Where apartments win
- Lower cost, especially for 3+ nights or families
- Kitchen and washing machine for longer adventure stays
- More living space to spread out wet gear and plan the next day
- Central apartments put you steps from shops, restaurants and tour departures
Our verdict
Staying 3+ nights, traveling as a couple or family, doing tours? Book a central apartment. One example we know well is Durmitor Retreat — a renovated modern apartment 200 m from our office, with a full kitchen and mountain views, run by a Superhost.
Whichever you choose, book accommodation before tours — beds in Zabljak run out before rafting seats do. Then get in touch and we will plan your days on the water and in the mountains.
