The most common question we get by email: “We have 3 days — what should we do and where should we stay?” After 15 years of running tours from Zabljak, we have a proven answer. Here is the itinerary we recommend to friends, hour by hour.
Why base yourself in Zabljak
You could raft the Tara as a long day-trip from the coast, but you would spend 8+ hours in a bus. Staying in Zabljak flips the math: short transfers, early starts without pain, and evenings in a real mountain town instead of a highway. Book a central apartment — Durmitor Retreat is a renovated modern apartment about 200 m from our office, with a full kitchen for early breakfasts — and everything below becomes walkable.
Day 1 — Arrive and warm up
- Afternoon: Arrive in Zabljak (2.5–3 h drive from Podgorica, ~3.5 h from the coast). Check in, stock the kitchen at a supermarket in the center.
- Late afternoon: Walk or drive to Black Lake (3 km). The lakeside loop takes about an hour and is the perfect leg-stretcher after a drive.
- Evening: Dinner in town — order kacamak once in your life. Early night; tomorrow is the big one.
Day 2 — The full Tara canyon
This is the centerpiece: our 36 km rafting through the deepest part of the Tara canyon (€120). Morning departure from Zabljak, a full day beneath 1,300 m canyon walls, all the major rapids, lunch included, back by early evening. It is Europe’s deepest canyon and this section is the reason people cross continents for it.
Traveling with kids or prefer a lighter day? Swap in the 14 km rafting (€60) — the most scenic stretch, half the day, suitable for families.
Day 3 — Mountains, then home
- Morning: Jeep safari across the Durmitor ring — high viewpoints over the canyon and the massif that you simply cannot reach in a normal car. Alternatively: the zipline at Djurdjevica Tara Bridge on your way out.
- Afternoon: Check out and drive on — Kotor, Podgorica, or north towards Serbia and Bosnia. The Tara Bridge is on the northern route; stop for photos.

How to book the package
- Book the apartment first — Zabljak beds are the scarce resource, especially July–August.
- Then book tours: reserve rafting online or contact us (+382 69 202 254, tarakularaft@gmail.com) with your dates and group size — we will schedule the 36 km day around the weather and arrange the jeep safari to fit.
Three nights, one river, one mountain ring — that is the trip people write to us about years later. Book both halves early for 2027.
