Montenegro is small enough to drive across in a day — and rich enough to fill weeks. This 7-day loop links the coast to the mountain north: Kotor, the Piva canyon, Durmitor, the Tara, Biogradska Gora and Kolasin. We drive these roads year-round; here is the route with honest driving times.
Day 1 — Kotor
Land in Tivat or Podgorica, base yourself in Kotor. Old town walls, the ladder of Kotor viewpoint, boka bay light in the evening. Sleep low — from tomorrow you climb.
Day 2 — Kotor to Zabljak via Piva (4–5 h driving)
Head north through Niksic, then follow the Piva canyon — an emerald reservoir squeezed between cliffs, with the road running through tunnels cut into the rock. Stop at the Piva Monastery near Pluzine (famous frescoes, relocated stone by stone when the dam was built). Then climb the dramatic serpentines over the Piva plateau to Zabljak. Arrive by late afternoon; stretch your legs with the Black Lake loop, 3 km from town.
Days 3–4 — Durmitor and the Tara (base: Zabljak)
Two nights minimum in Zabljak — this is the heart of the trip. Book a central apartment so tour mornings are effortless; Durmitor Retreat is a modern renovated option 200 m from our office.
- Day 3: the big one — 36 km rafting through the deepest part of the Tara canyon. Full day, all the major rapids, 1,300 m walls overhead. Families can choose the gentler 14 km run instead.
- Day 4: Durmitor ring by car or jeep safari — Sedlo pass, viewpoints over the massif — or a proper hike (Ice Cave, or Bobotov Kuk for the fit). Evening: kacamak and local lamb in town.
Day 5 — Tara Bridge to Biogradska Gora (2.5–3 h driving)
Drive east to the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge — our second base sits right at it. Walk the bridge, ride the zipline across the canyon if you have the nerve, then follow the Tara downstream on one of the Balkans’ most beautiful roads to Mojkovac and Biogradska Gora National Park — one of Europe’s last primeval forests, with an easy lakeside loop around Biogradsko Lake. Sleep in or near Kolasin.
Day 6 — Kolasin and the Moraca canyon
Kolasin is a relaxed mountain town — in winter, a ski hub. Options: hiking in Bjelasica, a visit to Moraca Monastery on the drive south, or simply slow coffee and mountain air.
Day 7 — Back to the coast or Podgorica (1.5–3 h)
The Moraca canyon road (or the new highway) drops you to Podgorica in about 1.5 h; the coast adds another hour. Loop closed.
Road trip notes
- Mountain roads are good but slow — trust the times above, not the map’s optimism.
- Fuel up in towns; stations thin out on the plateau.
- Fix your rafting date first and build the loop around it — write to us with your dates, or browse all tours to choose your Durmitor days.
