Montenegro’s north runs on seasons more than most destinations. The Tara’s water level, Nevidio’s temperature, Savin Kuk’s snowpack — they dictate what is possible and when. Here is the full 2027 calendar as we see it from Zabljak, plus how far ahead you actually need to book each activity.
Month by month
January – March: snow season
Deep winter on the Durmitor plateau. Skiing at Savin Kuk, snowshoeing, frozen Black Lake. No rafting — the river is cold and high. Book ski-week accommodation 2–3 months ahead for New Year and February holidays.
April: rafting begins
Snowmelt swells the Tara — this is the highest, fastest water of the year. Rafting opens for adventurous guests; expect cold water, wetsuits and big rapids. Hiking is still limited by snow at altitude.
May: green season
Strong water, wildflower meadows, few crowds. One of our favorite months for the 36 km canyon run. Lower-altitude hiking opens up.
June: everything opens
Rafting in full swing, Nevidio canyoning season starts as the water warms, high trails clear of snow. A near-perfect month with lighter crowds than midsummer.
July – August: peak season
Warmest water, most stable weather, every tour running daily — rafting, canyoning, zipline, jeep safari, hiking. Also the busiest weeks of the year: accommodation and popular dates sell out first. The 14 km family rafting is at its friendliest now.
September: the connoisseur’s month
Water still pleasant, canyoning holds until mid/late month, forests turning gold, crowds gone. If your dates are flexible, come now.
October: last rafting
Rafting winds down through October with autumn colors in the canyon. High hiking depends on early snow.
November: quiet month
Between seasons. Many businesses rest; a fine time for solitude and low prices, but plan around limited services.
December: winter returns
Snow settles in, Savin Kuk opens as conditions allow, and Zabljak turns into a snow town through March.
Booking lead times for 2027
- Accommodation in Zabljak: the true bottleneck. For July–August and New Year, book 3–6 months ahead. A central apartment like Durmitor Retreat simplifies every early tour start.
- Rafting (small groups): 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season; more flexible in May, June, September.
- Rafting (groups 10+): 1–3 months ahead to guarantee boats and guides on one date.
- Nevidio canyoning: book early — small daily capacity, strict season (roughly June–September).
- Jeep safari & zipline: usually bookable a few days out, except peak weekends.
