Zabljak sits at 1,450 m in northern Montenegro, and there’s no way to reach it that isn’t a mountain road. That’s a feature, not a bug — but it helps to know your options. Here’s the practical rundown on how to get to Zabljak from the four places our guests usually start.
From Podgorica (~2–2.5 hours by car)
Two routes, and the choice matters:
- Via Nikšić and Šavnik — the most direct line, climbing through the Krnovo plateau. Efficient and scenic in an open, windswept way.
- Via Nikšić and the Piva canyon — longer, and one of the great drives of the Balkans. The road hugs the wall of the Piva canyon past the emerald reservoir, through dozens of rock-cut tunnels, before turning east toward Zabljak. If you’re not in a hurry, take this one at least once.
The alternative eastern approach runs via Kolašin and Mojkovac on better, faster main roads (partly motorway), then climbs to Zabljak past the Tara canyon — a good option in winter or bad weather, and it takes you right past the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, where our second base sits.
From Kotor and the coast (~3.5–4 hours)
Head inland to join the Podgorica–Nikšić corridor, then continue as above. Leave the coast early: the first hour out of the Bay of Kotor is slow, and you want to hit the mountain roads in daylight. Budva and Tivat add similar times.
From Dubrovnik (~4–4.5 hours)
Cross into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg, then either follow the coast to the Nikšić road or cut through Trebinje (Bosnia) toward Nikšić — the Trebinje route is often quicker and quieter, but check your rental agreement covers Bosnia and count on two border crossings. Summer border queues on the coastal crossing can add an hour; mornings are best.
From Belgrade (~5–6 hours)
South through Zlatibor and Prijepolje, crossing into Montenegro toward Bijelo Polje and Mojkovac, then up to Zabljak. It’s a long day but a steadily prettier one. Many Serbian guests break it with a stop in Zlatibor.
By bus
Zabljak has a small bus station with regular connections via Nikšić (from Podgorica and the coast) and via Mojkovac/Pljevlja from the north. Buses from Podgorica take around 3 hours. It works, but frequencies are limited — check the day’s timetable in advance and don’t plan tight connections. From the station, everything in town including our office on Narodnih Heroja bb is a short walk.
Rental car tips for the mountain roads
- A normal car is fine — no 4×4 needed for Zabljak itself. Winter tyres are legally required in the cold months and genuinely necessary.
- Fuel up in Nikšić or Mojkovac; options thin out after that.
- Mountain roads are narrow with local drivers who know them too well. Use the pull-outs, enjoy the viewpoints, and add a buffer to every time estimate above.
- If your plans include Bosnia (Trebinje route) confirm the green card / cross-border coverage when booking the car.
