Djurdjevica Tara Bridge — Everything You Need to Know

Our second base sits about 100 m from the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, so we see it in every light and every season — morning fog filling the canyon, summer crowds, winter silence. It is Montenegro’s most photographed structure for good reason. Here is the full picture for your visit.

A short history

The bridge was completed in 1940 — a concrete arch bridge that was, at the time, the largest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe. It spans the Tara canyon at around 170 m above the river, carried on five sweeping arches, the largest with a 116 m span.

Its most famous chapter came in 1942, during World War II: to halt an Italian advance, the partisans demolished the central arch — with the help of engineer Lazar Jauković, one of the bridge’s own builders, who was later executed for it at the bridge. A monument to him stands at the crossing today. The bridge was rebuilt in 1946 and has carried the northern road ever since.

The zipline over the canyon

Today the bridge is also the launch point for one of the Balkans’ great adrenaline rides: ziplines strung across the Tara canyon beside the bridge, sending you over the river far below with the arches in your peripheral vision. It takes under a minute and no experience — most people who swear they won’t do it, do it. We run zipline sessions here alongside our rafting operations; see our tours or ask at the base.

Viewpoints and photo spots

  • From the bridge itself: walk it — pedestrians are fine — and look 170 m straight down at the green Tara.
  • North side, downstream: a short scramble to the classic side-on view of all five arches against the canyon.
  • From the river: the rarest angle — looking up at the arch from a raft. Some of our Tara programs pass beneath the bridge; nothing on the rim compares to it.
  • Light: morning for fog effects, late afternoon for warm stone; summer middays are harsh and busy.

Practical notes

  • The bridge is on the main Zabljak–Mojkovac road, about 20–25 minutes’ drive from Zabljak town.
  • Cafés and souvenir stands cluster at both ends in season; parking is at the ends of the bridge.
  • It is free to visit and walk at any time.

From the bridge to the river

Standing on the bridge, most people have the same thought: what is it like down there? The answer is our day job. The 36 km rafting through the canyon’s deepest section (€120) shows you the Tara the bridge only hints at; the 14 km run is the family-friendly taste. Our base is right beside the bridge — stop by, or contact us to combine the zipline and a rafting day into one visit.
