The single biggest factor in what your Tara trip feels like isn’t the route — it’s the month. The river changes character completely between April and October. Here’s our honest breakdown of the best time for rafting the Tara, based on running this river every season since 2011.
How the Tara’s season works
The Tara is fed by snowmelt from Durmitor and the surrounding mountains. Spring means high, fast, cold water and big rapids. By midsummer the levels drop, the water warms, and the river becomes gentler and greener. The rafting season runs April to October; outside those months, water and weather conditions don’t allow commercial trips.
Month by month
April — high water, serious rapids
Snowmelt is in full flow. The river is at its highest and fastest, rapids push into class IV territory, and the water is genuinely cold — full wetsuits, no arguments. This is the month for experienced rafters chasing adrenaline. Not the month for young children. Weather in Zabljak can still be wintry; pack layers.
May — big water, better weather
Still powerful, slightly more forgiving than April. Days get longer and warmer, the canyon turns green, and waterfalls along the walls are at their most dramatic because of the runoff. A great compromise month for fit adults who want strong rapids without April’s rawness.
June — the sweet spot for many
Water levels are still lively but the weather is reliably pleasant. Crowds haven’t peaked yet. If you want a bit of everything — real rapids, warm days, manageable numbers on the river — June is hard to beat.
July and August — warm, calm, family season
Peak summer. The water drops and warms enough for proper swimming stops, rapids settle into friendly class II–III, and this is when our 14 km family-friendly run is at its best. It’s also the busiest period — Zabljak fills up, so book accommodation and rafting ahead. Mornings on the water are noticeably quieter than midday.
September — our guides’ favourite
Ask our team when they’d raft for themselves and most say September. The summer crowds vanish almost overnight, the water is still comfortable, the light in the canyon turns golden, and the forests above start changing colour. You’ll often have long stretches of river with no other raft in sight.
October — quiet end of season
Cooler water and air, wetsuits back on, and a peaceful, almost private canyon. Weather is less predictable, so keep plans flexible. The autumn colours on the canyon walls are spectacular.
Wildlife through the season
Spring and early summer bring the most birdlife along the river; keep an eye out for grey herons fishing the shallows and, if you’re lucky, chamois on the slopes above. The canyon is part of Durmitor National Park, so the whole corridor is protected.
So when should YOU come?
- Maximum adrenaline: April–May, on the 36 km run
- Families and first-timers: July–August
- Best all-round balance: June or September
- Solitude: late September–October
