Planning a family trip to Montenegro and wondering if rafting on the Tara is right for the kids? Short answer: yes, and it’s often the highlight of the entire trip. Longer answer — it depends on your kids’ ages, temperaments, and which tour you pick. We’ve guided thousands of families over two decades. Here’s exactly what parents need to know.
Minimum Age and Why
Our age minimums are strictly enforced for safety:
- Age 7+: Our family combo tour (3h rafting on calmer section + 4h jeep safari)
- Age 12+: The full 14km Durmitor National Park tour
- Age 14+: The 36km deep canyon tour
These aren’t arbitrary. Age 7 kids can follow instructions reliably, wear gear that fits, and have enough core strength to stay seated through rapids. Under 7, we can’t guarantee safety protocols work.
Safety for Children
Every child gets:
- Child-sized neoprene wetsuit (we stock XS down to age 6 size)
- Child life jacket (not an adult one — different buoyancy rating)
- Helmet sized to fit
- Seat position in the middle of the raft (safest)
- Guide attention — we add a co-guide for tours with more than 3 kids
Our guides are trained specifically for family tours — different pace, more frequent swim stops, more storytelling.
What the Day Looks Like
Family tours start at 9:00 AM from Žabljak. Check-in, gear fitting (kids love this part — neoprene suits are cool), safety briefing with kid-friendly demonstrations, transport to launch point.
On the water: calm start with easy practice, first gentle rapid, swim break in a calm pool, lunch stop on the riverbank, second half with slightly more active paddling, return. Kids are usually exhausted by the end — in the best way.
What Kids Love Most
- The splashes. Every rapid = water in the face. Kids giggle through all of it.
- Swimming between rapids. Jumping off the raft into a pool, then climbing back on. Best part of the day for most kids.
- The guide’s stories. Each rapid has a name and a story. Kids remember these years later.
- Being “the crew.” Giving them a paddle and real commands makes them feel trusted, capable, adult.
Common Parent Concerns
“What if my kid panics?”
Very rare in practice. Children handle moving water better than adults because they don’t overthink it. If a child panics during the first calm stretch, the guide will pull over and let them acclimatize. If genuine panic continues, we can transfer them to the support boat.
“What if my kid falls in?”
The life jacket does 100% of the work. Child falls in = child floats instantly face-up. Guide pulls them back within seconds. Most children find falling in hilarious once they realize they were safe the whole time.
“Can my 6-year-old come?”
No, with rare exceptions. We’ve had parents bring 6-year-olds who were physically larger than average, mature, and experienced in water — but these are case-by-case decisions made with a phone call first, not at the base.
“What about non-swimmers?”
Fine. Many children on our tours can’t swim. Life jacket keeps them afloat. Tell us at booking — we’ll pair them with a guide in the middle seat.
“Will the rapids be scary?”
Depends on the child. For most 8–12 year olds, Class II rapids (which is what the family tour includes) feel exciting but not scary. If your child is anxious in advance, reassurance plus hearing other kids’ reactions during the tour usually eliminates the nervousness.
What to Pack for Kids
- Swimsuit (to wear under neoprene)
- Complete change of warm, dry clothes for after
- Closed-toe shoes with straps (no flip-flops)
- Sunscreen — reapply at lunch stop
- Hat and sunglasses (with strap!)
- Reusable water bottle
- Favorite snack or energy bar
- Waterproof phone case (kids ALWAYS want to take photos)
Full gear list: complete packing guide.
Ideal Family Trip Structure
Based on hundreds of family bookings:
- Day 1: Arrive Žabljak late afternoon, dinner in town, early sleep
- Day 2: Family rafting tour (3h rafting + 4h jeep), evening relax
- Day 3: Optional — horse riding at Durmitor or a light hike
- Day 4: Return to Podgorica or Tivat
Don’t overbook active days. Kids exhaust faster than parents expect. One active day between rest days beats three consecutive active days every time.
Photos and Memories
Our guides take photos during the tour — included with your booking. We share them via WhatsApp or email after the tour. We also give each family a small “certificate of completion” that kids love showing at school.
Book Your Family’s Tour
Our family combo tour is the most popular choice. For teens (14+), consider the full 14km tour — it’s a real adventure without the full 36km fatigue.
Questions specific to your family? Call us at +382 69 202 254 or WhatsApp. Tell us kids’ ages, temperaments, and water experience — we’ll recommend honestly. Your kid having a bad first rafting experience is worse for us than losing a booking.
