Complete Packing List for Tara Rafting: What to Bring (and What to Skip)

You’ve booked your Tara rafting tour — congratulations. Now comes the question every guest asks us: “What do I actually need to pack?” After two decades of running tours from Žabljak, we’ve watched hundreds of travelers over-pack, under-pack, and occasionally show up with something genuinely unexpected. This guide covers exactly what to bring, what to leave at home, and why.

What We Provide (You Don’t Need to Bring)

Every booking with Tara Kula Raft automatically includes:

  • Neoprene wetsuit — sized to you, keeps you warm in cold water
  • Neoprene boots — grip-soled, for walking on slippery rocks
  • Helmet — certified whitewater rating
  • Life jacket (PFD) — certified, worn at all times on water
  • Paddle — adjusted to your height
  • Dry bag — for your personal items on the raft

You don’t need to buy or rent any rafting-specific gear. Everything safety-critical is provided and maintained to international standards.

Essential Items to Pack

Worn Under the Wetsuit

  • Swimsuit — one-piece or board shorts. This goes under your neoprene suit. Avoid cotton underwear (stays wet, gets cold).
  • Sports bra for women — preferably quick-dry material.

After-Rafting Change of Clothes

You’ll be soaked. Bring a complete change:

  • Quick-dry t-shirt or sweater
  • Dry underwear and socks
  • Comfortable pants or shorts
  • Closed shoes (sneakers or sandals with straps — no flip-flops)
  • Light fleece or jacket (especially May/June/September/October)

Accessories

  • Small towel — microfiber works best, dries fast
  • Sunglasses — with retention strap (otherwise you’ll lose them on the first rapid)
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+) — canyon walls reflect UV, sunburn is real even on cloudy days
  • Hat or cap — for before/after the tour
  • Small first-aid kit — band-aids and any personal medication

Documents & Money

  • ID or passport (kept in waterproof pouch at base)
  • Cash in euros for coffee breaks, lunch (if not included), and tips
  • Insurance card (recommended but not mandatory)

Optional But Highly Recommended

For Photos

Everyone asks about photos. Your options:

  • Waterproof phone case with neck lanyard — most reliable, about €15
  • GoPro or similar action camera with head or chest strap
  • Floating phone case — important if you drop it, it won’t sink

Our guides also capture photos on every tour (included in your booking) and share them afterward via WhatsApp or email.

For Comfort

  • Small reusable water bottle — staying hydrated on the water is easy to forget
  • Energy bar or snack — especially for half-day tours where lunch isn’t included
  • Bug spray — May-August, mosquitoes can be active in shaded canyon areas
  • Chapstick with SPF — wind and sun dry lips fast

For Multi-Day Tours

If you’ve booked our 2-day rafting with camping or deep canyon 2-day tour, add:

  • Sleeping bag (we can provide one for €10/night if needed)
  • Second complete change of clothes
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Toiletries (biodegradable soap if possible — we’re in a protected national park)
  • Warm layer for evenings (canyon gets cold after dark, even in summer)

What NOT to Bring

  • Cotton clothes — stay wet, lose insulation, get cold fast
  • Jewelry and valuables — leave at your hotel or in our secure lockers
  • Large camera bags — there’s no space on the raft for DSLR gear
  • Cash beyond what you need — again, locker is safer
  • Bulky towels — microfiber only; normal towels are useless when wet
  • Flip-flops or loose sandals — your boots come off, you walk to riverbanks, you need grip

Month-by-Month Packing Adjustments

The basics don’t change, but seasonal extras make a difference:

  • May / early June: Add thermal top layer, wool socks, and gloves for cold mornings.
  • Late June-August: Standard pack. Extra sunscreen, hat essential.
  • September-October: Fleece is essential. Pack waterproof rain layer. Early sunrise = cold mornings.

Tips From Our Veteran Guides

“Buy the cheapest quick-dry shirt you can find, don’t bring your favorite.” — The river is kind to equipment but it will get dirty.

“Bring twice as many socks as you think you need.” — Dry feet make everything better.

“A waterproof phone pouch costs €15 and saves your vacation.” — Enough said.

“Snacks. Bring snacks. Everyone always wants more snacks.” — Adrenaline makes you hungry.

FAQ

Do I need to bring my own wetsuit?

No. We provide wetsuits sized from XS to XXXL, plus children’s sizes from age 7. If you have your own and prefer it, bring it — but don’t buy one just for this tour.

Can I leave my valuables somewhere safe?

Yes. Every tour starts at our base in Žabljak where we have secure lockers for phones, wallets, passports, and anything else you don’t want to risk. There’s no charge.

What if my phone gets wet?

Your phone will not get wet if it’s in a proper waterproof pouch. If you forget one, we sell them at the base for €15. Don’t rely on “water-resistant” phone ratings — splashes during rapids are far beyond what phones can handle.

Is there a changing room at the base?

Yes. Full changing rooms, showers, and lockers. You arrive dressed normally, change into your rafting gear, and come back to your own clothes after.
