14 km vs 36 km Tara River Rafting: Which Run to Pick?

Every week someone calls our Zabljak office with the same question: should we do the 14 km or the 36 km Tara river rafting trip? Both are excellent. They’re just built for different people. Here’s the honest comparison we give over the phone.

The quick comparison

14 km run 36 km run
Price €60 €120
Time on water 2–3 hours 4–5 hours
Total trip time Half day Full day
Rapids Most concentrated stretch Rapids plus long scenic sections
Canyon depth Lower canyon Deepest part — up to 1,300 m walls
Best for Beginners, families, tight schedules Adventure seekers, photographers, repeat rafters

The 14 km run: maximum action per hour

The 14 km trip runs the final stretch of the canyon, where most of the Tara’s rapids are packed close together. You’re rarely more than a few minutes from the next one. That makes it feel intense even though it’s the easier, shorter option — and it’s why it works so well for first-timers and kids. You’re done in half a day, which leaves the afternoon free for Black Lake or the Djurdjevica bridge.

The 36 km run: the full canyon experience

The 36 km trip starts higher up and carries you through the deepest section of the canyon. Between rapids there are long, calm stretches where the raft drifts and you just look up — 1,300 metres of limestone wall above you, waterfalls coming off the sides, and no road, no buildings, no signal. Rafters who’ve done rivers elsewhere consistently tell us this section is what stays with them.

It demands more: a full day, more paddling, and enough stamina to still be enjoying it in hour four. No technical skill required — our licensed guides handle the steering — but you should be comfortable with a long active day outdoors.

Which should you pick?

Choose the 14 km if:

  • It’s your first time rafting
  • You’re bringing children — this is the run our family trips use
  • You only have half a day in Zabljak
  • You want rapids more than sightseeing

Choose the 36 km if:

  • You want to see the deepest part of the second deepest canyon on Earth
  • You have a full day and reasonable fitness
  • You’ve rafted before and want more than a taster
  • Scenery matters as much as adrenaline

What if you’re a mixed group?

Split groups are normal. Parents with young kids take the 14 km while the older teenagers or grandparents-who-refuse-to-act-their-age do the 36 km — both trips run from the same bases, so meeting up afterwards is easy. Our family combo day (€120) is another option worth asking about.
