Most people know Zabljak as a summer rafting and hiking base — that is our world, after all. But from December to March this is Montenegro’s winter capital: the highest town in the Balkans at 1,456 m, with reliable snow, a ski mountain ten minutes away and a completely different, quieter Durmitor. If you are planning a 2027 winter trip, here is what to expect.
Savin Kuk ski center
Savin Kuk (2,313 m) is Zabljak’s main ski mountain, a short drive from the town center. The ski runs descend from high on the peak with serious vertical and big views over the Durmitor massif. You will find equipment rental in town and at the base, ski school options for beginners, and far shorter lift lines than anything in the Alps — at a fraction of alpine prices. There is also the smaller Javorovača slope near town, ideal for children and first-timers.
The snow season
Snow typically arrives in late November or December and holds through March, often into April on the mountain. Zabljak winters are genuinely cold — nights well below freezing — and snowfalls can be heavy. That is exactly the charm: metre-deep snow on the roofs, pine forests in white, and the kind of silence you do not get in summer.
Winter Durmitor beyond skiing
- Black Lake in winter — the 3 km walk from town leads to a frozen, snow-ringed lake that many locals consider more beautiful than in August.
- Snowshoeing and winter walks across the plateau meadows.
- Sledding — every kid in Zabljak owns a sled for a reason.

Where to stay in winter
Winter changes the accommodation math. You want three things: heating that actually works, a central location (side roads take longer to clear after snowfall), and a kitchen, because on a cold night walking out for dinner loses its appeal fast.
A modern central apartment is the ideal setup. - Winter tires or chains are legally required and genuinely needed on the climb to Zabljak.
- Book New Year and February school-holiday weeks months ahead — they sell out first.
- Restaurants run shorter hours than summer; the kitchen in your apartment earns its keep.
