Travel Insurance for Rafting & Adventure Sports in Montenegro

Travel insurance for adventure sports — rafting, canyoning, zip lines — is strongly recommended for Montenegro trips. Standard travel insurance often excludes “extreme sports.” Here’s what to look for and what our guests need to know.

Does Standard Travel Insurance Cover Rafting?

Most policies DO cover commercial whitewater rafting up to Class IV (which is what we offer on the Tara). Check your policy for “adventure sports” or “whitewater rafting” coverage specifically. If unclear — call your insurer before the trip.

What Coverage You Actually Need

  • Medical emergency — essential, includes helicopter evacuation from canyon if needed
  • Trip cancellation — protects your deposit if you can’t travel
  • Equipment coverage — your phone/camera dropped on water
  • Personal liability — if you injure another guest or damage equipment

Policies We See Work Well

Not specific recommendations, but patterns we see from our international guests:

  • World Nomads — popular with backpackers, covers rafting up to Class IV
  • True Traveller — UK based, explicit whitewater coverage
  • Allianz Global Assistance — US/Canada, check adventure sports rider
  • EU Health Insurance Card (EHIC) — base coverage for EU citizens but does NOT cover adventure sport injuries or evacuation

What Our Insurance Covers

Every tour we run includes third-party liability coverage for guest injury caused by our equipment or guide error. We cannot cover your personal property or trip cancellation — that’s your travel policy’s job.

When You Might Not Need Extra Insurance

If you’re doing only our 14km tour and your standard policy covers Class II-III rafting, you may not need add-ons. Check your policy wording.

When You Definitely Do Need It

  • Canyoning Nevidio — classified as extreme sport by most insurers
  • Full 36km Tara canyon — sometimes excluded from basic policies
  • Multi-day tours with overnight camping
  • Any time you’re doing 2+ activities in a day
