Canyoning Through Nevidio: Montenegro’s Wildest Canyon Adventure

Nevidio is Montenegro’s most intense canyoning experience — a 2.7km narrow canyon that was closed to the public until 1965 because it was considered impassable. Today, with a certified guide, it’s one of the most memorable adventures in Europe. Here’s what to expect on our Nevidio canyoning tour, who it’s for, and why we run it only in peak summer.

What Makes Nevidio Special

Most canyons you can photograph from a viewpoint. Nevidio, you can only experience from the inside. The canyon walls are 200–500m high, often only 1.5 meters apart. You wade, climb, jump into plunge pools, slide down natural rock slides, and swim through narrow sections where sunlight barely reaches.

What the Day Looks Like

8:00 AM: meet at our base in Žabljak. Transfer to canyon entrance (1h).
9:00–10:00: gear fitting, safety briefing, short walk to canyon entrance.
10:00–14:00: canyoning — descending through the full 2.7km, with multiple jump points (2m to 8m), natural water slides, swimming sections, and climbing over rocks.
14:00–15:00: riverside lunch, shower change.
15:00–16:00: return to Žabljak.

Gear We Provide

  • Full neoprene suit (thicker than rafting — 5mm)
  • Neoprene hood, boots, gloves
  • Helmet (certified for canyoning impact)
  • Life jacket
  • Harness with safety line

What You Need

  • Swimsuit to wear under the neoprene
  • Complete change of warm dry clothes for after
  • Waterproof phone case (highly recommended)
  • Sunscreen for before/after
  • Light hiking shoes for the walk to canyon entrance

Safety Requirements

Nevidio is more demanding than rafting. We require:

  • Minimum age: 16
  • Able to swim at least 50m
  • Reasonable physical fitness — you’ll climb, jump, wade for 4 hours
  • No major back, knee, or shoulder issues
  • Not pregnant, not heart conditions, not recent surgery

Every group has 1 guide per 4 guests. All guides carry international canyoning certification (CAPRA or equivalent).

Why Only Peak Summer?

Nevidio runs reliably only from late June through early September. Outside this window, water flow is either too high (dangerous) or temperatures too cold (hypothermia risk despite neoprene). Water is always cold inside the canyon — 8–12°C even in August.

Who This Is For

  • Adventure travelers who’ve rafted and want the next step
  • Fit 20-something groups
  • People who’ve done canyoning elsewhere and want a harder challenge
  • Photographers who want unique canyon interior shots

Not for: first-time adventure travelers, anyone uncomfortable in water, or guests who want relaxed scenic experiences. Start with our 14km rafting tour instead.
