Durmitor Hiking Trails for Rafters: Best Routes Near Žabljak

Rafting the Tara is half the Durmitor experience. The other half is on foot, in the mountains above the canyon. Here are the best hiking trails for rafters — short enough to do alongside a river day, scenic enough to be a highlight on their own.

Easy Trails (1-2 hours)

Black Lake Circuit

3.5km, flat, well-marked. The most popular walk in Durmitor. Start at the Black Lake parking, 15 minutes from Žabljak. Perfect recovery walk after rafting.

Savin Kuk Valley

2-3 hours round trip. Cable car up + easy walk on the plateau with 360° views. Best clear-day activity.

Zminje Jezero Loop

4km easy, 1.5 hours. Snake-shaped lake through spruce forest. Less touristy than Black Lake.

Moderate Trails (3-5 hours)

Bobotov Kuk Summit

6 hours round trip, 1,100m elevation. Durmitor’s highest peak (2,523m). Not technical but demanding. Best for fit rafters who want something more.

Alisnica Valley

4 hours, moderate ascent. Remote valley, wild horses, less traveled. Good for photographers.

Planinica Ridge

5 hours, panoramic views of both Tara Canyon and Durmitor peaks from one trail. Combines both landscape types.

Advanced Trails (Full Day)

Soa Ridge Traverse

8-10 hours, 1,500m elevation. Multiple peaks in one day, exposure sections. Requires hiking experience.

Tara Canyon Rim Walk

Full day on the canyon edge with dramatic drops. Not marked — requires local guide. Ask at our base.
