The question arrives daily in four languages: can we bring the kids? Short answer: yes — family rafting in Montenegro is not only possible on the Tara, it’s one of the best things you can do together here. The longer answer, which responsible parents deserve, is below.
From what age?
In peak summer conditions — July and August, when the water is low, warm and settled — children can join our family trips on the 14 km run from early school age. In spring high water, minimum ages go up sharply, because the river is a different animal in May. There is no single number that’s honest year-round, so tell us your children’s ages and your dates and we’ll give you a straight yes or no for that week’s conditions. That’s the phone call: +382 69 202 254.
Why the 14 km run is the family run
- Friendly rapids: in summer the 14 km stretch runs at class II–III — enough splash to make kids scream happily, not enough to be genuinely rough.
- Short time on water: 2–3 hours is right at the edge of a child’s attention and stamina. The full-day 36 km run is not — we don’t take young kids on it, full stop.
- Swim stops: calm pools where everyone gets in the water on their own terms, plus springs you can drink from — always the bit kids retell later.
How we keep kids safe
- Child-sized gear: properly fitted small life jackets, helmets and wetsuits — not adult gear cinched tight. Fit is checked by the guide, not the parent.
- Licensed, insured guides in every raft, briefing in English, German, Russian or Italian. Kids sit in the protected middle positions; the guide sets who paddles and when.
- Family grouping: your family stays in one raft with its own guide — you’re never split across boats.
- Swimming: children should be comfortable in water. Life jackets do the floating, but a child who panics in water will not enjoy this day, and we’d rather tell you that now.
What parents tell us afterwards
The pattern in the feedback we hear at the take-out is remarkably consistent: the parents came for the scenery, the kids came for the rapids, and both went home talking about the other thing. Drinking straight from a canyon spring beats every water park story at school in September.
The family combo option
If you’re staying a couple of days, ask about our family combo day (€120) — it pairs the rafting with more of Durmitor and is the easiest way to fill a family’s Zabljak stay without over-planning it.
Book it right
Come in July or August, choose morning departures (warmer by the time you’re wet, quieter river), and book ahead — family slots go first. Start at the experience page or send us the ages and we’ll take it from there. We’ve been putting families on this river since 2011.
