Stargazing at Durmitor: Night Sky Guide After Rafting the Tara

Durmitor at night is one of Europe’s darkest skies — no light pollution for 50km, elevation 1,450m+, clean mountain air. After a day of rafting, stargazing is the perfect unwinding activity. Here’s what you can see and how to enjoy it.

Why Durmitor Skies Are Special

Designated as a candidate for Dark Sky Reserve (2024). Bortle class 2-3 on scale of 1-9 (1=darkest). Milky Way visible with naked eye from April to October, spectacular July-September.

Best Stargazing Spots Near Žabljak

Black Lake (Crno Jezero)

15 min drive from town, parking lot works as observation point. Reflections of stars on the lake make for incredible photos.

Savin Kuk Plateau

Cable car up during day (last ride 17:00), walk down by moonlight. Higher elevation = clearer sky.

Katun Lokvice

Traditional summer farm settlement, no artificial light for kilometers. 20 min drive + 10 min walk. Our guides can point you here.

Riverside Camp (2-Day Tours)

Our 2-day rafting + camping tour includes a night sleeping by the Tara — canyon walls frame the sky dramatically.

What You Can See

Summer (Jun-Aug)
