14km vs 36km Tara Rafting: Which Tour Is Right for You?

You’ve decided to raft the Tara in 2026 — excellent choice. Now the real question: book the 14km half-day tour, or go all-in with the 36km full-canyon expedition? The difference isn’t just distance. It’s two fundamentally different experiences, and picking the right one can make or break your trip. Here’s the complete comparison from guides who’ve run both routes thousands of times.

The Quick Answer

  • Pick 14km if: You have half a day, you’re a first-timer, you’re with kids, or you want rafting as one of several activities in the day.
  • Pick 36km if: You have a full day, you want the iconic “deepest canyon in Europe” experience, and you want rapids that feel earned.

Both are real whitewater tours. Neither is “easy” or “hard” — they’re different durations with different intensity.

Route and Scenery

14km Tour — Durmitor National Park Section

The 14km tour starts at Brštanovica and runs through the upper Tara, inside Durmitor National Park. You’ll see:

  • Forested canyon walls, 200–400m high
  • Crystal-clear turquoise water with visible riverbed
  • Several smaller waterfalls entering the river
  • A few swimming-friendly calm pools

This stretch has the Tara at its most photogenic for close-up views — canyon walls are close enough to feel dramatic, but open enough for good lighting.

36km Tour — The Deep Canyon

The 36km tour continues past where the 14km ends, into the deepest section of the canyon. This is where you see:

  • Canyon walls reaching up to 1,300 meters (Europe’s deepest river canyon)
  • Sections where sunlight barely reaches the water until noon
  • The famous “Two Bridges” — suspension bridges crossing high above the river
  • Tara Monastery (12th century) visible from the river
  • Waterfalls plunging directly from the cliff face

The 36km stretch is what makes the Tara famous internationally. Photos of this section are what probably made you book in the first place.

Duration and Day Planning

| Factor | 14km Tour | 36km Tour |
|—|—|—|
| Time on water | ~3 hours | ~6–7 hours |
| Total day commitment | ~5 hours | ~10 hours |
| Start time | 9:30, 12:30, or 15:00 | 9:00 (single departure) |
| Return to Žabljak | Early afternoon | Late afternoon/evening |
| Lunch included | No | Yes (riverside) |

The 14km is a morning OR afternoon activity. You can combine it with a jeep safari, sightseeing, or a late lunch in Žabljak. The 36km is your full day — don’t plan anything active after.

Rapids and Intensity

14km Tour

You’ll encounter 10–15 rapids during the tour, ranging from Class II to a couple of Class III. Plenty of calm water between rapids — roughly 60% peaceful floating, 40% active paddling. First-time rafters feel challenged but never overwhelmed.

36km Tour

The 36km tour includes 40+ rapids, including multiple Class III and 2–3 Class IV depending on water level. More sustained paddling, longer individual rapids, and deeper canyon means the water feels more powerful. Still safe for healthy adults without rafting experience, but more physically demanding.

Physical Demands

14km: Moderate. You’ll use your arms and core for ~3 hours intermittently. Most people feel tired but good afterwards. No back issues.

36km: Real. You’ll paddle actively for 6+ hours with short breaks. Your shoulders and arms will be tired the next day. If you have back, shoulder, or knee issues, tell us at booking so we can assess fit.

Neither tour requires athletic conditioning, but the 36km is not for people who haven’t walked more than a kilometer in the past year.

Price and What’s Included

14km Tour Includes:

  • Transport Žabljak → launch point → Žabljak
  • Full neoprene gear (wetsuit, boots, helmet, life jacket)
  • Certified guide (max 8 guests per raft)
  • Safety briefing and photos from your guide
  • Welcome drink on return

36km Tour Includes Everything Above Plus:

  • Riverside lunch (traditional Montenegrin meal)
  • Longer transport return (through canyon)
  • More guide-led stops for photos/stories
  • Certificate of completion (yes, really — it’s a popular souvenir)

The 36km tour costs roughly 2.2x the 14km. Given it’s more than 2x the water time plus lunch, it’s actually better value per hour. But “value per hour” isn’t always the right measurement — if you only have 5 hours, 14km is infinitely better value than half a 36km experience.

Best For Different Traveler Types

Solo Traveler

Either works. If you have limited time or want to combine with other activities (jeep safari, canyoning), go 14km. If rafting is the main reason for your trip, 36km gives you the full experience.

Couples

We see about 60/40 split — 60% of couples choose the 36km for the “shared adventure” memory. If one of you is nervous about rafting, the 14km is a gentler introduction.

Families with Kids

Strong recommendation for 14km. The 36km is available from age 14; the 14km from age 12. But honestly, even for kids in their late teens, 14km is more fun — less fatigue, more swimming, more fun stops. Or book our family combo tour that pairs shorter rafting with a jeep safari.

Photographers / Content Creators

The 36km. No question. The deep canyon shots, the towering cliffs, the dramatic light — 14km simply doesn’t deliver the same visual material. Plus more time for stops.

Groups and Corporate Events

14km for groups of 10+, especially if there’s mixed fitness/experience. Everyone can complete it, everyone feels accomplished, lunch in Žabljak afterwards is easier to coordinate.

Bucket-List Travelers

36km. When you tell people you rafted the Tara, “the deepest canyon in Europe” is what makes the story. The 14km is wonderful but doesn’t enter that canyon.

Can You Do Both?

Yes — we recommend this for travelers spending 3+ days in Žabljak. Day 1: 14km as “warmup” and orientation. Day 2: jeep safari or canyoning. Day 3: 36km with fresh energy. Booking both tours gets you a 15% discount on the second one.

What Our Returning Guests Say

About 30% of our guests who did the 14km return the next year for the 36km. “I wish I’d done the 36km first” is the most common thing they tell us. “I wish I’d done the 14km first” is a close second from the other direction. The truth: pick based on your trip, don’t pick for SEO reasons.
