Zabljak is small — about 2,000 residents — but it is the highest town in the Balkans (1,456 m) and the only real base for Durmitor National Park. Where you sleep shapes your whole trip: how early you can start a hike, whether you can walk to dinner, and how easy your rafting pickup is. We have run tours here since 2011, so here is the honest local picture for the 2027 season.
The areas of Zabljak, explained
Town center
The center is where the supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, ATMs, the national park office and our own office (Narodnih Heroja bb) sit. Everything is within a 10-minute walk. If you do not have a car, or you want early tour departures without logistics, stay here. Tour pickups — including our 36 km Tara rafting — are simplest from central addresses.
Towards Black Lake (Njegoseva street)
Quieter, closer to the park entrance, but you will walk 15–25 minutes back to town for food and shops. Good for hikers with a car.
Motički Gaj and the ski-side edges
Chalets and eco-villages spread across meadows south and west of town. Beautiful views, more space, but you genuinely need a car — nothing is walkable, and in winter the side roads can be slow to clear.
Apartment, hotel or eco-village?
- Apartments — the best value in Zabljak. A kitchen matters here: restaurants close early off-season, and cooking a few meals saves real money. Modern renovated apartments in the center are the sweet spot for couples and families.
- Hotels — convenient for one-night stays and half-board packages, but nightly rates run higher and mid-range options are limited.
- Eco-villages and bungalows — wooden huts in the meadows. Atmospheric in summer; check heating and road access carefully for winter.
Seasonal price ranges (realistic, 2027)
Expect roughly €40–70 per night for a good central apartment in shoulder season (May–June, September–October), €60–100 in peak July–August and during the Dec–Mar ski weeks, and noticeably less in November and April. Hotels typically start where apartments top out.
What to actually look for
- Location first. “Walking distance to the center” should mean under 10 minutes — check the map, not the listing text.
- Heating. Zabljak is cold at night even in August. In winter it is non-negotiable.
- A real kitchen if you stay more than two nights.
- Parking if you drive — central street parking fills up in July.
- Host responsiveness. Mountain weather changes plans; you want a host who answers.
