Best Restaurants in Žabljak: Where to Eat After Rafting

Rafted the Tara all day, tired, hungry, wet? Žabljak has traditional mountain cuisine that’s perfect recovery food — hearty portions, local ingredients, reasonable prices. Here’s our guide to the best places to eat in Žabljak after a day on the water.

What Žabljak Cuisine Is Like

Mountain food. Lamb roasted under the sač (iron bell), cheese from Durmitor katuns, smoked meats, freshly caught trout from nearby rivers. Vegetables are seasonal. Portions are generous — one plate for a couple is often enough.

Restaurants We Personally Recommend

Konoba Polje (Traditional Mountain Tavern)

Family-run tavern, 10 minutes walk from main square. Known for lamb under sač (order 2h ahead), grilled trout, homemade cheese. Mains €10-18. Wine list focuses on Montenegrin reds.

Restaurant Mladost (After-Rafting Classic)

Central Žabljak, open all day. Lighter menu for tired rafters — soups, grilled meat, pasta. Mains €8-15. English menu available.

Restaurant Divlja Rijeka (Riverside Dining)

30-minute drive from Žabljak, beside a mountain stream. Fresh trout, kačamak (cornmeal mountain staple), specialty wines. Mains €12-20. Reservation recommended.

Bar Café Pržina (Coffee + Light Food)

Main square, good for breakfast and coffee. Sandwiches, pastries, excellent Turkish-style coffee. €3-8.

Pizzeria Balkan (Family Pizza Night)

For families with kids who aren’t in the mood for traditional mountain food. Solid wood-oven pizza, €7-12.

Must-Try Local Dishes

  • Lamb under sač — roasted in sealed iron pot over coals. Order 2-3h ahead.
  • Kajmak — creamy dairy spread, eaten with bread
  • Kačamak — cornmeal base, topped with kajmak and cheese
  • Smoked trout — from nearby lakes
  • Pršut — mountain-cured ham
  • Žabljak cheese — aged in rounds, best with homemade rakija

Opening Hours

Most restaurants open 11:00-23:00 in summer (May-October). Dinner service strongest 19:00-22:00. Lunch is available but quieter. Some close Mondays in off-season.

Booking

For Saturday nights in peak summer (July-August), call ahead — popular spots book out. Ask your guesthouse to phone for you if English is a problem.

Vegetarian & Dietary Needs

Vegetarian options exist but not abundant — mostly grilled vegetables, pasta, cheese dishes. Vegan is harder (say “veganski”). Gluten-free limited but improving.

Bringing It Back to Rafting

A traditional dinner at 20:00 is the perfect end to a half-day rafting tour. For a full-day 36km tour, you’ll arrive back hungry at 19:00 — restaurant service is perfect timing.
