The Tara Canyon region is one of Montenegro’s most photographed places — and for good reason. Here are 10 Instagram-worthy spots within a day’s reach from Žabljak, with tips on lighting, access, and best season for each.
- Curevac Viewpoint — panoramic view of Tara Canyon from 1,625m. Best light: golden hour (just before sunset). 20 min walk from parking.
- Black Lake (Crno Jezero) — reflections of Meded peak. Mirror-calm water in mornings. 5 min walk from car park.
- Đurđevića Tara Bridge — iconic arched stone bridge spanning the canyon. Best from below for dramatic scale.
- Tara River from Raft — from inside the canyon. Book a rafting tour to access.
- Savin Kuk Summit — 2,313m peak with 360° views. Cable car + 1h hike. Morning is best.
- Zabojsko Lake — hidden alpine lake in Sinjajevina mountains. 3km hike, little-known spot.
- Stupa Falls — 30m waterfall, requires short off-road access. Best in May–June (high water).
- Piva Canyon from the road — 30 min from Žabljak, dramatic blue water. Multiple pull-offs.
- Katun in Summer Bloom — traditional shepherd farms with wildflowers, June–July. Our jeep safari passes several.
- Tara Monastery from River — 12th-century monastery visible only from 36km rafting route.
Equipment Tips
Wide-angle lens (or phone ultrawide) for canyon scale shots. Polarizing filter to cut water glare. Drone allowed in some areas — check permits first. Waterproof case mandatory for any water-related shots.
Best Months
- May–June: waterfalls full, wildflowers bloom, green canyon
- July–August: clearest skies, warmest, most tourists
- September: golden autumn, fewer people, best balanced light
- October: autumn colors peak, cold mornings with mist
