Most people visit Durmitor National Park to see the famous Black Lake (Crno Jezero). But Durmitor has 18 glacial lakes, and the real magic is in the ones that take a 4×4 to reach. Here’s our insider itinerary for the hidden lakes — routes, best months to visit, and what to pack for a full day in the high plateau.
Black Lake has a paved road, a restaurant, and busloads of tourists. The higher glacial lakes have none of those. They sit at 1,800–2,100 meters, surrounded by wild grasses, wildflowers in summer, and the occasional shepherd’s hut. On a good day you might see no one else for hours.
Small, mirror-calm, completely silent. 25 minutes from Black Lake by jeep. Best light is mid-morning.
“Snake Lake” — named for its narrow curving shape. Surrounded by spruce forest. Good for photography in the afternoon.
“Fish Lake” — the clearest water in Durmitor. You can see stones 5 meters deep. Reachable only by jeep and a short hike.
“Devil’s Lake” — the highest of the four, deepest in color, sometimes called “the jewel of Durmitor.” Requires our Ring of Durmitor jeep route.
Our Ring of Durmitor jeep safari covers Jablan, Riblje, and Vrazje in one full day. Departure 09:00, return 17:30. Short walks (10–20 min each) connect jeep stops to lake shores.

Many guests do rafting in morning + jeep to lakes in afternoon. That works for the nearer lakes (Jablan, Zminje). For the full Ring route including Vrazje, book the jeep safari as its own day.
