The Tara Canyon is one of Europe’s most photographed adventure destinations — and if you’re coming with a camera or phone, a little preparation turns “nice shots” into “portfolio pieces.” Here’s our guide gear setup, best photo spots, and technique tips from two decades of running tours with photographers of every level.
Camera Options for the Tara
Smartphone (most common)
Modern iPhones (13+) and Pixel (6+) take excellent rafting photos. The main concern is waterproofing. Solution: a waterproof pouch with neck lanyard (~€15 — we sell them at the base). Don’t rely on “water resistance” ratings — rapid splashes exceed those.
GoPro / Action Cam
Ideal for the water itself. Mount options: head strap (gives you your perspective), chest strap (shows your paddle), helmet mount (stable shots), or floating handle (best for sharing between group).
DSLR / Mirrorless
Only works if you stay on the dry support boat (we offer this for photographer guests). A dedicated photo-boat tour can be arranged — contact us in advance.
The Best Photo Spots on the Tara
- Brštanovica Launch Point — First photos of the day, everyone fresh and excited. Canyon walls frame you.
- First Rapid (Class II “Splash”) — Action shots from the raft. Water spray catches sunlight beautifully.
- Swim Pool (~km 7) — Calm turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, safe to get out of raft. Best group photos here.
- Two Bridges (36km tour only) — Suspension bridges high above. Look up for dramatic scale shots.
- Tara Monastery (36km tour only) — 12th-century monastery visible from the river. Only accessible from the 36km tour.
- Final Rapid Before Šćepan Polje — Biggest splash of the day. Hand the camera to someone on the raft for this one.
Technique Tips
Light direction: Canyon walls create harsh shadows before 10 AM and after 15:00. Best natural light is 11:00–14:00, when sun hits the water directly.
Shutter speed (DSLR): 1/500s minimum to freeze rapid splashes. 1/250s for calm stretches.
ISO: Start at ISO 400. Deep canyon sections may need ISO 800.
Phone settings: Turn on “Live Photos” or equivalent. Rapid moments happen in 2-second bursts — you can pick the perfect frame afterwards.
GoPro tips: Wide angle (2.7K or 4K wide), 60fps for slo-mo potential, ProTune off for easier post-processing.
What Our Guides Can Do
Every guide carries a waterproof camera and takes photos throughout the tour. These are included with your booking and shared via WhatsApp or email afterwards. Mention at briefing if you have specific shot requests — guides are happy to accommodate.
Photo-Focused Tours
If photography is your main reason for the trip, book in September — the shoulder season has:
- Best canyon light (lower sun angle)
- Fewer other guests (less clutter in shots)
- Autumn color (if October)
- More time from guides for stops
